I have been meaning to try Crazy Don along Yonge Street for a while. Yesterday, when I was in the area of North York Centre, my friend and I decided to be spontaneous about where to go for dinner by walking along one side of the street and going into any restaurant that caught our eye. The one rule we had was that it had to be something new, because we’re were doing this for novelty’s sake.
We walked by Crazy Don and decided to go in after noticing their sign for the Tuesday half-price wings special. It’s been a while since I have gone out for wings, and that sounded like a great option. We went inside and we were immediately greeted by a courteous server who let us sit anywhere we wanted since it wasn’t too busy (we went around 7:30pm). We checked out the menu and decided to share 3 dishes for the most variety: Soon tofu seafood stew, the Korean fried chicken with fries, and the Sweet Potato Cheese-filled Pork Katsu.
The food came pretty quickly, the side dishes first (yum), and we dug into our dinner hungrily since we had just come from running errands and attending an aerial yoga class downtown (if you’re interested in this, here’s the groupon we used for the class at Cardio-Go at King West) and had worked up an appetite. You can tell I did 😂😋
I loved their fried chicken- it was probably my favourite dish from dinner. The wings were perfectly crispy on the outside with tender meat on the inside. It was well-seasoned, and the fries were nice and crispy. It was my first experience eating Korean fried chicken (I’ve been meaning to try it for a while, but I try to eat healthier so fried food usually is omitted) and oh man, it was good!
I enjoyed the soon tofu seafood stew. I find that this particular dish is indicative of whether a Korean restaurant is good because it’s a staple, so I order this at Korean restaurants often. This tofu stew was nice – spicy, soothing, savory without being too salty. It includes mussels, Kimchi, squid tentacles, shrimp, and an egg.
Unfortunately, the katsu dish was only just okay to me. I had high hopes because it sounded great on paper (I mean… Cheese filled, sweet potato stuffed pork katsu? Sounds good!) but it was sort of underwhelming. It didn’t have as much cheese as I’d expected and it was mainly sweet potato which made this one dish very starchy and filling. The meat was a bit on the tougher side too. Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t taste bad – it just wasn’t as good as I’d expected it to taste. We actually had some trouble finishing this one and took it home. But hey, that’s what takeaway boxes are for! (Morning after verdict: Tastes good as leftovers if you heat it up in the oven!)
All in all, I had a good experience trying this place for the first time and would come again. Do give this place a try if you’re in the area. The wings are fantastic, the food is authentic (approved by Korean friends) and the service is good. I wasn’t too crazy about the katsu don dish I tried this one time, but maybe I’ll try some other dishes from them next time to fully formulate my decision.
